Speaking to the media today, David Moyes says he’s
confident of adding new players to the squad before the transfer window closes.
When asked about the potential Cesc Fabregas deal, Moyes
revealed there was some uncertainty as to whether or not a third bid would be
placed to tempt Barcelona into selling.
Add to that new Barcelona coach Gerard Martino admitting
his club will ‘reject a third bid’ it’s likely Moyes will be exploring his
options, but who fits the bill?
Here are some alternatives that I think would be great
additions to the club.
See them after the cut..
Luka Modric
Luka Modric, 27, is a Croatia international who plays for
Real Madrid. He plays central midfield, but has the ability to play on either
flanks. He is only 5ft 9, but has a low centre of gravity, that helps him to
get away from players, when being marked. He has been in and out of the Real
Madrid squad this season. Mesut Ozil has been playing behind the striker,
keeping Modric on the bench for quite a lot of last season’s games. Manchester
United have been monitoring the player for years, and especially last summer,
many twitter accounts were claiming ‘The deal has been agreed’, the papers were
the same, but nothing happened. He signed for Real Madrid for £33m, and it
turned out Man United hadn’t even made a bid. The former Tottenham player would
be a world class signing for Manchester United. He has vision to pick out
players and can also convert chances when asked upon. He scored for Real Madrid
in the champion’s league last season. A strike from outside the box, which
kick-started the teams victory, and ended our champions league campaign. If I
was Moyes, I would probably offer 25m for the player, and see what happens, but
I think 30m is about right. Out of all of the midfielders possible, I’d
probably go for an attacking midfielder, and a defensive. Luka looks like he’d
be the best possible attacking one around. He gets my pick.
Ilkay Gundogan
This guy looks like a star in the making. The Borussia
Dortmund central midfielder has the ability to play defensive or attacking
midfield. He was one of Dortmund’s’ stars that got them into the champions
league final, and was an integral part of their midfield force. He mainly
played as a holding midfielder with Sven Bender and done very well there. His
passing skills are brilliant. The way he plays reminds me of Michael Carrick.
He controls the midfield, protects the back line and is also an influential
play maker. Ilkay is only 22 and shows a lot of promise. Many are saying he is
the ‘New Schweinsteiger’, and if that is the case, why aren’t United going for
him? His price tag is just going to increase as he becomes a better player, so
I think if United are interested, they should make a bid sooner rather than
later. Last season, he played a total of 45 games for Dortmund, bagging 5
goals. For a midfielder that’s not bad. Overall, I think this guy is going to
be a star, and we should approach Dortmund for the player. Maybe, Kagawa could
use his charm to push the deal through, as they used to be team mates. A fee of
about 18m would be a fair offer, but I think that price could double in a few
years’ time. If we got Gundogan, he would always give 100% and be loyal to the
club. He would fit in very well to our 4-2-3-1 formation, playing as a holding
midfielder, with Carrick. These two would be brilliant I think. Their passing
will tear apart teams, and there is a mix of experience and youth, which is
good for the squad. Come on Kagawa, tempt him!
Yohan Cabaye
Yohan Cabaye is a French international who plays for
Newcastle United. He is a box to box central midfielder, who has made 60
appearances for the club, and has also got 23 caps for France. He is, in my
opinion, the best central midfielder for Newcastle. He has great passing
ability, with the skill to score goals as well as setting them up. The player
could play alongside Carrick at Man United, and I’m sure he’d do well there. I
would only sign Cabaye unless Gundogan or Modric fails, these two are better,
but Cabaye still is a great player. Newcastle rely on him a lot, as seen when
he was injured, they really struggled. He is the heart of their midfield and
without him; they would not to do very well. As he is probably Newcastle best
player, they will not want to let him go. Although, if a good offer comes in, I
think they will not turn it down. I’m sure Cabaye would rather play for a
bigger club, so personal terms would not be too much of a problem. Another good
thing about Cabaye is that he can take free kicks and corners, which means Van
Persie, can be in the box, giving us more of a goal threat. A couple of seasons
ago, Cabaye scored a free kick against United, for Newcastle. He is a very good
player, so let’s just see what happens!
Marouane Fellaini
Fellaini is a 6ft 4 centre mid for Everton. He is a
Belgium international, and can play holding or attacking mid. He played under
David Moyes at Everton, and showed real class, especially last season. The
giant is known for his huge afro, which makes him look even taller! The player
has been linked with United since Moyes got the job as manager, and I think
Fellaini would be a world class signing. He could play holding mid for us or he
could go attacking. Last season, Fellaini played in the no.10 role, just behind
the striker, Victor Anichebe. I think that we should try and get him. In his
contract, there is a 20m buyout clause, which is a fair price, in my opinion.
He would give us more of an aerial threat from corners, as well as helping out
the defence. The player scored 12 goals for Everton last year, and playing with
a better team around him at United, he could get double that. If he was to
join, I’d probably play him holding with Carrick. I know he is a very good
attacking player, but I think he would do a better job with tough tackling in
midfield, which would be very useful for the team. There is no real other
physical midfielder, and that’s where I think Fellaini comes in. Another bonus
is that Fellaini is only 25, so he is still improving, and will be a great
player for about another 6-7 years. Moyes has signed him before; let’s hope he
does it again!
To conclude, I think we should go for at least one of
these players, preferably 2! If I was Moyes, I would first of all get Fellaini,
he can play anywhere in midfield, and do a good job. Then we need someone who’s
a bit more technical, so I would try Modric, if that doesn’t work, go for
Gundogan. Lastly Cabaye, I would see how the others go, if they don’t work out,
we know Cabaye is a good player, and we can trust him to do a good job at
United. Lets just hope Moyes has the right thing in mind!
