Roberto Martinez hopes to be re-united with his former
player at Goodison Park.
Everton are set to offer Wigan Athletic £15 million for
midfielder James McCarthy, the Daily Star reports.
The Republic of Ireland international has been the
subject of two bids from Everton earlier in the summer, with Roberto Martinez
desperate to be re-united with McCarthy, who was one of his key players at
Wigan.
However, Wigan owner Dave Whelan is holding out for closer
to £20 million but Martinez is confident that he can persuade his former boss
to sell the midfielder for slightly lower than his valuation.
The midfielder would like the opportunity to work with
Martinez again, with the pair forming a close relationship during their days
together at Wigan.
McCarthy played a key role in Wigan winning the FA Cup
last season but couldn’t prevent the clubs relegation from the Premier League.
However, Everton aren’t the only team who are interested
in signing McCarthy, with Tottenham known to be considering making a move for
the player as Andre Villas-Boas looks to bolster the centre of midfield.
Martinez has already raided his former employers by
bringing Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles to Goodison Park and will
now hope that he can add McCarthy to that list.
