Jack Wilshere says Arsenal will recover from their Champions League hiding by Borussia Dortmund

Wednesday, 17 September 2014

Jack Wilshere is confident that Arsenal will bounce back from their Champions League hiding at the hands of Borussia Dortmund last night, even if things haven't quite clicked yet for the Gunners this season.

A 2-0 scoreline in favour of the Germans was flattering on Arsenal, who could have reached double figures such was the frequency with which they cut through a hapless Arsenal defence.

As it was, Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished off the decisive chances either side of half-time, with Arsenal disappointing right across the park.

To further compound matters for the North London side, Wilshere appeared to injure his troublesome ankle in the final minutes of the game, but remained on the pitch as Arsene Wenger had used all three of his substitutions.

The 22-year-old told the Evening Standard: "We'll bounce back. Our next Champions League game (against Galatasaray on October 1) is at home and hopefully we'll get the three points.

Wenger preaches patience with Welbeck

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called for patience when it comes to striker Danny Welbeck opening his account for the club.

The England international has played twice for Arsenal since moving from Premier League rivals Manchester United late on in the transfer window.

Welbeck has not scored for the club since his switch and is yet to taste victory after a draw with Manchester City in the top flight and a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League.

Arsenal were second best at Signal Iduna Park as Jurgen Klopp's side overran the visitors on Tuesday, although Welbeck was among the chances and showed glimpses of quality.

Guardiola: Man United could not afford my stars

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola insists Manchester United were unable to afford his star players, despite their pre-season spending spree.

The Premier League club have brought in the likes of Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao in recent weeks but were reportedly also interested in Bayern trio Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

United manager Louis van Gaal has worked with the three Bayern players at either international or club level previously but all three remain at the Allianz Arena ahead of the German champions' UEFA Champions League opener against Manchester City on Wednesday.

Despite United investing heavily in their new-look side, having missed out on European qualification last term, Guardiola maintains their financial clout was not enough to tempt his big-name players.

REVEALED: Ferguson ´the best´, says Rooney

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney extended the olive branch to former boss Alex Ferguson, calling him "the best manager there's been".

Rooney, 28, came to Old Trafford in 2004 on Ferguson's insistence, the Scot signing the then-teenager for £25.6million from Everton.

And despite falling out with the legendary manager on multiple occasions, Rooney admitted Ferguson - who took United to 13 Premier League, five FA Cup and two UEFA Champions League titles - was an inspiration to a generation at the club.

"At the time, I came into the squad as a young lad and there were a few other young lads. He brought all that together and made us world club champions," Rooney told MUTV for an interview to mark a decade at the club.

"I'm very grateful for everything he's done. It was a great feeling.

Luis Enrique: Champions League not a priority

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique will not prioritise the UEFA Champions League over regaining the La Liga title this season.

The former Spain international is preparing to lead the Camp Nou outfit into Europe's elite club competition for the first time, beginning with a home fixture against APOEL on Wednesday.

Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax complete the line-up in Group F, but Luis Enrique refused to rank potential glory in the Champions League over domestic success in his debut campaign.

"For me it would be great to win either - not forgetting the Copa del Rey," he said. "It's the start of the season and we're going to fight to win them all. Let's hope we do win one and deserve it.

OFF THE POST: ONLY CHELSEA CAN STOP CHELSEA

Monday, 15 September 2014

Jose Mourinho said just after the mauling of Swansea that, it was a fantastic performance and no excuses of the milky horses this time, at least, a prolific striker is now in the mix.

Taking the Swansea and Everton game into consideration, most of you will agree with me that “it’s only Chelsea that can stop Chelsea”. A look at some talking points in their season so far:

DIEGO COSTA IS SIMPLY A MENACE
Several debates over the years that can players from the Spanish league perform in the Premier League? – I think with his hat trick against Swansea and his season so far, arguably, we can put a rest to that debate.

Some pundits also believe Diego Costa will struggle in the Premier League but with his flawless performance so far this season (7 Goals in 4 Matches), he showed us the glimpse into the downright destructive path he's about to carve out.

His hat trick was entirely the product of being in perfect positions and overpowering defenders, something that's pretty clearly repeatable. No jaw-dropping goals from him so far but you will agree with me that none of goals came via luck but being at right position at the right time.

“Costa has surprised me. To score seven goals in four games is not normal. He cannot keep that up, but it proves we were right to wait [for Costa] and not buy last summer, or in January. The team was built, and waiting for a striker.” – Jose Mourinho

He needs Oscar, Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas to stay fit and with this, he can chase down Luis Suarez's goal total from last season.

THE DEFENSE IS STILL SHAKY
Chelsea were poor defensively, conceding three goals to Everton and on Saturday against Swansea, switched off a couple of times as well. It was evident in Mourinho’s tactics when he brought on Ramirez in the second half to shield the back four more.

The only positive for Chelsea and its fans is that Mourinho does not joke with his defensive issues. He will fix it.

CESC FABREGAS – CHELSEA’S NEW TALISMAN
Jose Mourinho said at the beginning of the season that Fabregas was the missing part of his midfield last season and with another super display of passing with class from the Spaniard this weekend, Mourinho has finally got that real talisman for Chelsea.

To show his qualities and eye for passes, Cesc Fabregas broke another record of making assist in each of his last six Premier League games.

In this light, let’s see if they can continue this flawless performances against Manchester City this weekend.

MY OPINION ON ARSENAL VS MAN CITY by Asimolowo Abimbola

I’m so sure the Arsenal fans are buzzing, glad and excited with the way Saturdays game at the Emirates went, from the whistle it was a better performance , they played so well, so much better than the previous games but similar with the community shield, just a different Man City side.

From the start we pressed and got right in their faces, Flamini and Wilshere to thank for that, much better passing even though patient, every Arsenal fan who saw that game even though we just got a point would have seen a lot of positives to take forward. Sanchez was impressive, tracking back, coming inwards, helped Welbeck and Debuchy a lot but he still needs to play with the team a lot more, Danny Welbeck on the other hand was good on the day in my honest opinion, the fans ran praise on him in the opening minutes with every touch and with him having played his first game he did alright, good runs and link ups but can still do better and hopefully gain confidence and much composure in front of goal.

Match Review: Juventus Vs Udinese by Stanley Princewill McDaniels

Juventus eased away with a convincing 2-0 victory over Udinese at the Juventus Stadium to underscore their perfect start to the 2014/15 Serie A campaign.

The Bianconeri drew first blood as early as the 8th minute when Stephan Lichtsteiner cut back from the right to thread a cross finding Carlos Tevez who beautifully slotted home for the opener.

Soon after was a smoke of controversy when Patrice Evra was brought down in the box by Panagiotis Kone-  The referee was not interested.

The home side continued to dominate play with Paul Pogba showing his "classical" technique mixing it with power thereby stamping his authority in midfield.

Udinese slowly found their rhythm when Italian Nigerian's Angelo Ogbonna got enough touch to divert Di Natale's headed effort wide.

Bundesliga Review: Hamburg beaten again, Augsburg claim first points

Hamburg's woes continued with a 2-0 defeat at Hannover in the Bundesliga on Sunday, while Augsburg claimed their first points of the season.

Despite investing significantly following their narrow escape from relegation last season, Hamburg have started the new campaign wretchedly.

A 0-0 draw at newly-promoted Cologne on the opening weekend was swiftly followed up by an embarrassing 3-0 home defeat to Paderborn, the other Bundesliga newcomers.

Mirko Slomka's men did show some promise on Sunday, but Hannover were ultimately worthy of their victory at the HDI Arena.

Hannover broke the deadlock with just 13 minutes on the clock, Leon Andreasen heading past Jaroslav Drobny in the Hamburg goal following an excellent cross from Miiko Albornoz.
