The German centre-defender has been linked with a move
away from Borssia Dortmund for much of the summer, and Arsenal is a new
potential destination on Mats Hummels’ list. According to Metro, the Gunners
are about to test Dortmund’s hard-line approach by tabling an offer for the
centre-back, and to battle with Man United for the player’s signature
Amid speculation that Thomas Vermaelen could be leaving
the Emirates Stadium this year, Arsenal could find themselves in need of
another centre-defender, especially since Bacary Sagna has already left the
club for Manchester City. A big money move for Hummels would require some squad
rotation however, as Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker currently frequent
the starting positions
Dortmund remain adamant that the World Cup winner is not
leaving their ranks this summer, but Metro suggests that Arsenal are lining up
a £30 million offer, designed to significantly test the Bundesliga club’s
resolve.
From a Man United perspective, the interest from North
London could leave Louis Van Gaal with some radical rethinking to do. The club
have lost the services of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this year, and look
very likely to strengthen in the defensive areas. Vermaelen is another target
of theirs, but the Red Devils face competition from Barcelona for the Belgian’s
signature. Should the Nou Camp get Vermaelen and the Emirates get Hummels, then
United will be forced to quickly turn elsewhere.
