Alex Song is deemed as surplus to requirements at
Barcelona and reportedly, Premier League duo of Manchester United and Liverpool
is ready to battle for the signature of Ivory Cost midfielder.
English newspaper Daily Mirror has reported today that
the Barcelona midfielder, 26, is understood to be receptive to the interest of
both clubs. Song is well aware that he is no more required and is set to be
sold by Barca, two years after moving to the Spanish club from Arsenal.
Barcelona signed Song in 2011 for whopping £16m, but now
ready to sell him for almost half of that price as they are keen to feel the
other areas of concern. Barca Sporting director Andoni Zuzizaretta is of the
opinion that Song is not a “Barca material”. This situation of the player has
not gone unnoticed in England and both, Manchester and Liverpool are ready to
step up their pursuit of ex-Arsenal star.
It is no secret that Manchester United management (and
fans too) is not happy with the performance levels of Maroune Falliani and they
have been linked with host of names including Toni Kroos of Bayern Munich and
Ander Herrera of Athletic Bilbao.
However, they have received a red signal from Bayern
management and price of Ander Herrera will be at least 4 times more than that
of Alex Song. And Athletic Bilbao management is known in football world as the
most difficult when it comes to negotiating a deal and United management is
aware of this fact.
Liverpool meanwhile, are going to play in the Champions
League next season and want to increase the depth of their squad. It was
reported earlier this week that Reds’ management has handed over a £70 million
war chest to manager Brendon Rodgers and Song could prove a quality and
economical option the Northern Irishman.
The good news for both the club is, Song himself is
interested in a move to Premier League club. Speaking in March, Song revealed
England was always likely to be hisfavorite destination should he leave Spain.
He said: “If I
leave Barcelona it will be to return to the Premier League.
“I will return to England one day, that’s for sure.”
Alex Song is a guaranteed starter for his country Ivory
Cost and it is likely that any decision over the future of the player will be
made only after the completion of the World Cup in Brazil.
