The U20 women's side are very close to sealing a record
seventh appearance at the FIFA U20 World Cup with the annihilation of the
Basetsana in the first leg played in Abuja
Nigeria's U20 Women have brightened their chances of
another berth at the FIFA U20 World Cup slated for Canada later in the year
with a 6-0 thrashing of the Basetsana of South Africa in the final round, first
leg tie played at the Abuja National Stadium on Saturday.
The country's flag bearers have been scoring goals with
reckless abandon in the qualifiers with 30 goals already in their kitty and
none conceded in five matches.
Goals from Asisat Oshoala, a brace from Halimatu Ayinde,
Yetunde Adeboyejo, Winifred Eyebhoria and Sunday Uchechi ensured that the
Falconets can go for the return leg in Johannesburg with the assurance that
they already have one leg in the World Cup finals in Canada.
Peter Devdevbo’s team defeated Sierra Leone 16-0 on
aggregate and also beat Tunisia 8-0 before setting up a date with the
Basetsana.
Falconets have featured at every edition of the FIFA U20
World Cup since inception in 2002 in Canada and they were the first African
nation to qualify for the final of the competition when they ended up as beaten
finalists at Germany 2010 World Cup. They lost 2-0 to the Germans in Dresden.
