Dutch defender says he has proved wrong all those who
believed a move to Celtic would be bad for his career.
Celtic central defender Virgil van Dijk believes that
finishing above Ajax in their Champions League group will prove to his critics
in his homeland that they were wrong to doubt the wisdom of his move to
Glasgow.
Neil Lennon paid Groningen £2.6 million to bring the
22-year-old to Parkhead in June and his recent displays suggest that he could
prove to be as big a bargain as Victor Wanyama.
He is on the radar of Holland coach Louis van Gaal and
making the squad for next summer’s World Cup finals would further validate his
choice of club.
“In the beginning, people back home thought I had made a
bad decision coming here because no one there follows the Scottish League,” he
said.
“But I knew what I was doing. I thought about it a lot
and I knew that Celtic was an unbelievably big club. You could see that again
on Tuesday night.
