Manchester United manager David Moyes does not intend to
speak with Wayne Rooney in an attempt to convince him to remain with the
Premier League champions, the Daily Mirror has reported, as Moyes does not feel
any player should need convincing to play for United.
Rooney has been the subject of a number of offers from
Chelsea and his future is not yet clear, with Moyes reluctant to discuss the
status of Rooney after United drew 1-1 in a pre-season friendly with AIK
Stockholm. Rooney was originally to take part in the fixture but was forced to
pull out with a shoulder injury, and combined with a hamstring problem it is
not yet known when he will be back at full fitness.
United’s next game is Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial, at Old
Trafford on Friday against Sevilla and Moyes does not expect Rooney to be fit
to take part - and nor does the manager feel Rooney will be ready for the
Community Shield this weekend or England’s friendly with Scotland.
“It is not a serious injury and it won’t keep him out for
a long time,” Moyes said, adding: “But the problem we’ve got with the Wembley
game on Sunday is that he has not played any games. He’s not had any football
so we need to take that into consideration.
“Is his fitness more a concern than his future? Yes.
We’re trying to get Wayne into a condition where he is ready to play,” Moyes
continued. Regarding Rooney’s mooted move to Chelsea, the former Everton boss
noted: “You don’t need to convince anybody to play for Manchester United.”
