Frank Lampard is running out of time to prove his fitness
ahead of Chelsea’s opening Premier League game of the season, the Daily Mirror
has reported, as the England midfielder is giving an ultimatum by Blues manager
Jose Mourinho.
Lampard has yet to feature in Chelsea’s pre-season
programme due to an Achilles injury picked up when training in Thailand with
Chelsea in July, but rather than returning to England for treatment he chose to
stay with the squad in the hope of the problem clearing up and allowing him to
play in a warm-up game.
But the problem has persisted and as yet Lampard has not
featured at all in Chelsea’s summer friendlies, with the 35-year-old needing to
play at least an hour against Real Madrid on Wednesday or Roma on Saturday if
he is to be in contention to play Hull in Chelsea’s trip to Hull on August 18.
If Lampard is not ready to face Steve Bruce’s Tigers then
it could mean an immediate debut for Marco van Ginkel, the young Netherlands
international midfielder signed from Vitesse Arnhem this summer, the Mirror
adds.
