Less than a month after former Malaga centre-back, Martin
Demichelis joined Atletico Madrid on a free transfer, he has reportedly asked
the club to terminate his contract so he may reunite with former manager,
Manuel Pellegrini at English Premier League side, Manchester City.
According to Hugo Condes on Spanish radio station, Cadena
SER’s Hora 25 Deportes programme, Manchester City has had every attempt to sign
Real Madrid defender, Pepe immediately rejected and Pellegrini has reportedly
personally reached out to Demichellis about joining him in England and asked him
to request that Atletico Madrid cancel his current contract and allow him to
leave.
Manchester City has been tracking Portuguese
international, Pepe throughout the summer as Pellegrini, once the manager of
Real Madrid, was very impressed with the centre-back during his time at the
Santiago Bernabeu and feels he would be a perfect fit for the ‘Citizens.’
However, Pepe and Real Madrid have both rejected a move,
thus forcing Pellegrini to turn to his defensive stalwart for the past three
seasons, Martin Demichelis.
Condes went on to add that Pellegrini has offered the
Argentine at two-year contract and a role in the starting line-up, something
that is not guaranteed at Atletico Madrid.
Demichelis has reportedly asked Atletico Madrid to
rescind his contract and if he is allowed to leave, the club will seek out a
new defender to bolster their Champions League squad.
