Super Eagles goalkeepers’ trainer, Ike Shorunmu, has
assured that Nigeria will not lack good replacements for the current set of
senior national team goalkeepers when they finally retire from the game.
The former Eagles safe hands told Complete Sports that
contrary to fears being entertained by many that there is no quality successors
for the trio of Vincent Enyeama, Austin Ejide and Chigozie Agbim, he has been
able to identify likely successors.
Shorunmu said that aside Akpeyi, he has some young
goalkeepers whom he had been monitoring for some time, adding that those boys
have given him hope that Nigeria would have easy transition as far as
goalkeeping department is concerned.
”I don’t see us
having any problem about who takes over goalkeeping duties for the Eagles when
Vincent and Austin quit the stage because we have a reservoir of talented
shot-stoppers to pick from,” he stated.
He refused to
mention names of those young goalkeepers he has discovered but pointed out that
he would bring them in at the appropriate time and when the need arises.
The 2002 Korea/ Japan World Cup star however sees the
trio of Agbim, Enyeama and Ejide being available for a longer time with the
Super Eagles if they keep their shape.
On the return leg match with Cote d’Ivoire, Shorunmu said
the Eagles would defend their 4-1 lead with all their might.
