Says Eagles coach got it wrong in the bonus row
Former Nigeria captain, Austin Okocha says Eagles gaffer,
Stephen Keshi's decision not to invite his captain, Joseph Yobo should be
respected by all Nigerians.
Keshi, bfor the umpteenth time snubbed Yobo when he
unveiled his 20-man list for next month's international friendly game against
the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Durban, and Okocha insists the coach has
the final say over who makes his team and who does not.
“We must give Keshi a free hand to operate and believe in
him. He knows what he is doing and he is the coach. He is trying real hard to
get it right with the kind of players he invites and all we need to do is to be
patient and
encourage him'',said Okocha during the commissioning of the Nigeria
Football Federation corporate office in Abuja on Thursday.
Okocha however believes Yobo is still relevant in the
national team set-up and advised him not to think of quitting international
football,yet.
''Yobo should not even think of retiring now. I think he
is still a good player who is playing week-in, week-out for Fenerbahce. If he
is a regular for a big club like that, then he cannot be as irrelevant in the
Eagles as he is being made to look like," Okocha further said, adding that
he retired prematuredly from the national team.
On the bonus row that almost stopped the Eagles from
playing in last month's FIFA Confederations Cup,Okocha disagreed with the way
Kesh handled the saga and said he would have acted differently if he were in
Keshi's shoes.
“I think the bonus issue was blown out of proportion. At
the end of the day, we all have one target, which is to give the best to
Nigeria. I would have acted differently if I was Keshi," concluded Okocha.
