According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal have turned their
attentions to Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata.
Since Jose Mourinho has returned to Stamford Bridge, the
25-year-old’s future at the club has come under scrutiny, the newspaper claims.
However, the Blues insist he is not for sale, with the
report stating Arsene Wenger is monitoring the situation carefully.
The French manager came close to signing Mata in 2011
before he signed for Chelsea and would jump at an opportunity to try and sign
him again, it is claimed.
Successes
Since arriving in West London for £23.5million, Mata has
helped his side win the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League.
Furthermore, after scoring 11 goals last season and
assisting 13, the Spaniard won Chelsea’s player of the year for the second
season in a row.
Reports
But a report in the Sun earlier in the week suggested
that Mourinho was looking to get rid of Mata along with David Luiz to clear
space and provide funds for the possible transfer of Wayne Rooney to Stamford
Bridge.
However, the former Real Madrid coach rubbished these
suggestions in a press conference.
He was reported by the newspaper as saying: “I spoke with
them during the summer but when they finished the Confederations Cup I wished
them luck and told them I will see them on July 28.
“I have told them they are very important for me. How can
I change that two days later? So, no contact with them.”
