England manager Roy Hodgson has backed Joe Hart despite his blunder during England's 3-2 friendly win over Scotland but warned he will be keeping a close eye on the Manchester City keeper.

After three seasons as England's undisputed number one, Hart is suddenly under pressure following an inexplicable blunder to gift Scotland their opening goal at Wembley on Wednesday.

"He was gutted," said Hodgson. "The first thing he did at half-time was apologise to me for letting in the goal.

The Southampton striker came off the bench to net the deciding goal with his first touch of international football, after the visitors surrendered their lead on two occasions.

England twice came from behind to beat Scotland 3-2 at Wembley on Wednesday night, with debutant Rickie Lambert heading the winning goal.

The Southampton forward headed home a corner with his first touch of the ball to hand the hosts victory in the first meeting between the bitter rivals in 14 years.

James Morrison and Kenny Miller had twice given the Scots the lead earlier in the match, only for Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck to cancel out the advantage on each occasion.

Ricky Lambert says his England selection gives others hope

Southampton striker Ricky Lambert says his selection for England gives others hope that if they work hard they will get a chance at international level.

The 31-year-old has been called up to the national squad for the first time after scoring 15 goals in his debut season in the Premier League last term.

England face Scotland at Wembley on Wednesday where Lambert could partner a fit again Wayne Rooney up front.

Wayne Rooney joined his England team-mates for training on Monday ahead of this week's Wembley friendly with Scotland.

The striker has played only 45 minutes of pre-season football because of hamstring and shoulder injuries, but Manchester United gave him permission to report for duty at St George's Park.

And Rooney was out on the training pitch at 10am on Monday - half an hour before the scheduled start of the session - as preparations began in earnest for the first England-Scotland game in almost 14 years.


Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger happy for Jack Wilshere to link up with England



Arsene Wenger says Jack Wilshere has gone to play for England with Arsenal's blessing and has been assured by Roy Hodgson that everything possible will be done to protect his fitness.

The midfielder spent more than a year on the sidelines with knee and ankle problems between 2011 and 2012 and underwent a minor operation earlier this summer.

He has been nursed through Arsenal's pre-season campaign and only played the first half of Saturday's 3-1 friendly victory over Manchester City.
