Bayern Munich can become the Bundesliga’s first March
champions on Tuesday night at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
With eight games left to play, Bayern currently hold a
23-point lead over Borussia Dortmund, and a 24-point lead over Schalke, the two
sides who meet in the Revierderby. Should Bayern beat Hertha Berlin, Pep
Guardiola will win his first Bundesliga title.
Even if Bayern lose at Hertha, though, the Treble holders
could still celebrate in Berlin, should Dortmund and Schalke share the points
at the Westfalenstadion. A draw at Berlin would also be sufficient if the Royal
Blues take all three points off Dortmund.
Winning the Bundesliga title on the 27th game of the season
would better the record set in 2013, when Bayern won the league with a 1-0 win
at Frankfurt after 28 games.
“We’ve got to play well and win first,” Pep Guardiola
told a news conference in Munich on Monday. “I’ll be very happy and proud the
moment we win the title and if we win we’ll have to celebrate.”
The former Barcelona coach, however, said that he does
not plan to get involved in the obligatory beer showers following the final
whistle, adding: “I won’t stay on the pitch. I’ll be in the dressing room.”
While still being in the race to become the first team to
ever defend the Champions League title, and having reached the German cup
semifinal, Guardiola believes the league title is the hardest trophy to win.
“The championship is the most important title. You have
to win week-in, week-out,” Guardiola said. “You’ve always got to show you’re
better than the opposition.”
Bayern Munich could not only win the fastest Bundesliga
title of all time, but are also on course to become the first ever Bundesliga
club to go through a season without a single defeat.
“We’ve done well so far this season but we obviously want
to carry on in the same vein,” Guardiola said.
