Antonio Valencia has insisted that he spends a lot of
time working on his crossing and does extra practice with David de Gea in order
to improve.
The 28-year-old has shown positive signs this season he
can work his way back to his devastating best but as of yet, his crossing has
still been pretty terrible on the whole.
In his pomp, every cross seemed to find the head of a
team-mate (mainly Rooney) but nowadays Valencia’s final ball has been
frustratingly poor. He has clearly been working on improving behind the scenes
and he certainly needs to.
When questioned by a United fan how often he practised
his crossing, Valencia said: “I spend a lot of time working on crossing. Most
days I stay behind after training to do extra practice with David De Gea.”
Under Moyes, Valencia has had a fantastic resurgence in
form. He now has the confidence to run at players with a bit of pace again and
take them on whereas last year, his first instinct was to pass the ball
backwards.
The final ball is what is missing from Valencia this year
as, alongside the rekindled partnership with Rafael, he has been much improved
from last season and is on the way back to his unplayable best that saw him
scoop the awards at Manchester United’s end of season ceremony in 2011/12.
His combination of raw pace, power and strength make him
unstoppable at times and if he can continue working hard on improving his crossing,
there is every chance he could make a return to his best this year.
