Great Britain have been drawn to play the United States
away in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group next year.
In their first game back in the elite group of world
tennis since 2008, Leon Smith's team will travel to across the pond in
February.
Andy Murray won both his singles and the doubles with
Colin Fleming as the British defeated Croatia 4-1 in Umag last weekend.
It will be the first time the two countries have been
drawn against each other since 1999, when the United States won a thriller 3-2,
in a rivalry which began back in 1900 between the two nations.
The Americans have featured in the World Group first
round every year since 1989 and lost out to finalists Serbia in the
quarter-finals this year.
Jim Courier is likely to call upon the likes of John
Isner, Sam Querrey, Ryan Harrison and the best doubles team in the world, the
Bryan brothers Bob and Mike.
The British team, who are without a win at world level
since defeating Spain back in March 1986, will take on fourth seeds Argentina
or Italy in the quarter-finals should they advance.
Elsewhere in the draw defending champions and top seeds
Czech Republic were drawn to host the Netherlands, while their final opponents
in November, Serbia, who are seeded second, will take on Switzerland in a clash
that offers the prospect of world No 1 Novak Djokovic against multiple
grand-slam winner Roger Federer.
Five times champions Spain travel to Germany, Canada take
on Japan and France will host Australia in the top half of the World Group
draw.
In the other half Italy face Argentina and Belgium have
been handed a tricky trip to Kazakhstan.
Coach Smith said on the LTA's Twitter feed: "It is
an exciting tie in prospect with fans remembering the great drama when the
nations last met.
"We'll go into the tie with a lot of confidence and
look forward to it."
