Liverpool made a surprise bid to hire the services of
Palermo midfielder Josip Ilicic but Reds failed in their late attempt to Sign
Slovenian international as Fiorentina have already sealed the deal with
Palermo.
Palermo were relegated from top flight after horrific
performances in last year’s Serie A. In that failing side, Josip Ilicic was
perhaps the shining star who impressed overall but could not save his team from
going down. The 25 year old play maker scored 10 goals and provided 2 assists
in the league last season.
Italian publication Europa Calcio reveal that Liverpool
tried to sign Ilicis but the player did
not want a move away from Serie A and hence preferred Fiorentina instead.
Europa Calcio claim:
“Liverpool tried a last-minute offer for the talented
Slovenian, offering Palermo €12 million, some 2.5 higher than the offer of
purple (Fiorentina), but the player has reiterated firmly he wants to play in
Tuscany and does not take into account other routes.”
If true, this confirms that Rodgers is still looking for
an attacking midfield player after losing out on prime transfer target Henrikh
Mkhitaryan to Dortmund.
For now, Liverpool’s main concern is to somehow stop star
player Luis Suarez from leaving and then to add more firepower to push for top
4 places next season.
If Suarez does depart, the merseysiders will have a lot
of funds at disposal and will surely look to bring a top quality replacement
for the Uruguayan.
