Don't judge us yet, urges England captain Steven Gerrard after double defeat

Thursday, 21 November 2013

Steven Gerrard has urged fans to go easy on England as manager Roy Hodgson experiments on the road to Rio.

Successive home defeats to Chile and Germany have brought Hodgson's men down to earth after the comprehensive victories last month that secured their place at next summer's World Cup.

England will not be among the top seeds for December's group draw but Gerrard sees no reason to panic - and reckons a low-key build-up could work in their favour.

"I think it is important people are not too harsh on us. These games are all about experimenting and trying things," the Liverpool midfielder said.

The Three Lions midfielder has indicated he will retire from international football after Brazil 2014 but the 66-year-old feels his captain's new role will allow him to carry on.

Roy Hodgson believes Steven Gerrard can carry on playing for England after next summer's World Cup.

The Liverpool midfielder has previously suggested he will retire after Brazil 2014, having already earned 105 caps since his international debut in 2000.

However, Hodgson is refusing to plan for the 33-year-old’s international departure just yet and hopes his captain will still be available after next summer.

World Cup qualifying: Steven Gerrard says England will miss Danny Welbeck in Ukraine

Saturday, 7 September 2013

Steven Gerrard admits an untimely suspension for the in-form Danny Welbeck has provided a major blow to England's plans.

Manchester United forward Welbeck picked up his second yellow card of World Cup qualification on Friday as England swept aside Moldova 4-0 at Wembley.

He also found the target on two occasions, taking his international tally to eight, but the night was overshadowed by his contentious booking for kicking the ball away.

England 4-0 Moldova: Welbeck doubles up in comfortable Three Lions victory

Friday, 6 September 2013

Roy Hodgson's men were comfortable winners at Wembley, but a booking for Danny Welbeck soured the evening, ruling the Manchester United star out of Tuesday's clash with Ukraine

England strolled to a comfortable 4-0 win against Moldova in their World Cup 2014 qualifying group clash, keeping pace with Montenegro ahead of their vital meeting with Ukraine on Tuesday.

Steven Gerrard broke the deadlock with a low, powerful strike in the 12th minute and, from then on, the hosts looked completely in control, meeting the expectations of a less-than-full Wembley.

Daniel Agger has hailed the influence of Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and says he will follow the midfielder's example after being made vice-captain.

Steven Gerrard suggests 2014 could be his final year in England jersey

Wednesday, 14 August 2013

National skipper Steven Gerrard has hinted that the 2014 World Cup could mark his farewell to the England team.

The Liverpool midfielder says he has to 'assume it's my last year' as, at 33 years of age, he does not expect to grace another major international tournament.

Were he to lead the Three Lions to Brazil next summer, and then through another shot at global glory, he would bow out after 14 years on the international stage and with well over 100 caps to his name.

Steven Gerrard tells Luis Suarez: Stay to earn dream move

Saturday, 3 August 2013

Steven Gerrard has told Luis Suarez a better career move than Arsenal is inevitable — and submitted as evidence the revelation he rejected a chance to leave Liverpool for a Champions League club, believed to be Bayern Munich, only last summer.

The Liverpool captain is being honoured for his 15-year service with a testimonial against Olympiakos on Saturday, when Suarez is expected to play at Anfield for the first time since biting Branislav Ivanovic in April and subsequently publicising his desire to quit the club.

Losing Suarez would be a blow – Gerrard

Thursday, 1 August 2013

Steven Gerrard feels Liverpool’s season will be ‘that little bit more difficult’ if the club sell Luis Suarez to one of their rivals.

Arsenal have had two bids for the striker rejected but the Uruguay international is keen to leave Anfield and has told club officials that he wants to hold talks with the Gunners.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has warned that the club will not sell for less than £50million but Gerrard is worried about the impact Suarez’s departure would have on the Reds, especially if he were to join a Premier League rival.

“It’s difficult every season to finish in the top four positions because of the power the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have got at the moment,” Gerrard explained.

Practice the key behind my free kicks, says Suarez

Wednesday, 6 March 2013

The Uruguayan has netted three direct set-pieces in his last two games and says his new-found proficiency from dead-ball situations is down to work on the training ground

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez says practice is the secret behind his deadly accuracy from free kicks.

The former Ajax man has converted from three dead-ball situations in the last two games, with five for the season overall, having never scored from a direct set-piece before this season.

He attributes his new-found proficiency to hard work on the training ground as well as learning from specialists, like Steven Gerrard, at the club.

"I practice," he told reporters. "Because it’s one skill that at one time I never really mastered and so I worked on it a bit.

"I think it just needed practice and you can also learn from watching players of the class of Steven and how he strikes the ball, as well as watching players from the past, it all helps.

"The more you practice, you grow in confidence, and it’s also a boost when your team-mates encourage you to have the confidence to shoot."

The Uruguayan also revealed that Brendan Rodgers' pre-match preparation also helps him to decide exactly what to do in free kick situations.

"The manager is really good at this preparation,” he continued.
