Tuesday, 31 December 2013

After Nicolas Anelka stirred up controversy with his allegedly anti-Semitic goal celebration, his fellow Frenchman has been criticised for making the same gesture two months ago.

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri has defended himself against accusations of racism after posing for a picture performing the 'quenelle' salute.

On Saturday, West Brom striker Nicolas Anelka used the gesture to celebrate a goal against West Ham and provoked controversy for its allegedly anti-Semitic connotations.

The Baggies confirm that they have spoken to their forward about his controversial gesture after netting against West Ham but will continue to use him while under investigation

Brom say that Nicolas Anelka has agreed not to repeat the controversial 'quenelle' goal celebration as he awaits the results of a Football Association investigation.

The French striker marked his second goal in Saturday's 3-3 Premier League draw at West Ham with a gesture that has been linked to anti-establishment and allegedly anti-semitic connotations in his homeland.

Anelka insisted that he had not set out to offend anyone of Jewish faith, stating that the action was dedicated to his comedian friend, Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, but he could face a ban of up to five games from the FA.

Nicolas Anelka hits back at French politicians over 'quenelle' criticism

Sunday, 29 December 2013

West Brom striker Nicolas Anelka has denied his 'quenelle" gesture is racist and hit out at French politicians who have criticised him for using it.

Anelka used the 'quenelle' as part of his celebration after scoring twice in West Brom's 3-3 draw with West Ham on Saturday.

The 'quenelle' salute was made famous by French comedian Dieudonne - a friend of Anelka's - and is linked by some to anti-Semitism.
