England vs Germany: I will use Daniel Sturridge when I see fit, insists Roy Hodgson

Tuesday, 19 November 2013

Roy Hodgson said on Monday that he was confident Daniel Sturridge was ready to play against Germany on Tuesday night and that he would use the Liverpool striker as he saw fit – especially as he had been playing with his current hip problem for his club.

Hodgson has made nine changes to the team that lost 2-0 to Chile on Friday, with only Wayne Rooney and Adam Lallana from that side starting tonight. He has also brought back captain Steven Gerrard, who has had injections in his hip to support ligaments in that part of his body, a procedure the player undergoes every two years.

The England international is keen for his attacking partner to remain at Anfield in light of ongoing speculation after notching 16 goals between them so far this season.

Liverpool attacker Daniel Sturridge hopes strike partner Luis Suarez will remain at Anfield as he looks to build on a prolific start alongside the Uruguayan.

Suarez publicly stated his desire to leave during pre-season, prompting Arsenal to bid £40,000,001 million in an attempt to trigger a release clause, but the Reds held firm and rejected all offers.

Suarez & Sturridge providing consistent quality for Liverpool, says Mignolet

The goalkeeper believes the strike duo's performances have been vital in all areas of the pitch for Brendan Rodgers' side and has refused to talk up the club's title chances.

Given the headline-grabbing displays of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in recent weeks, Simon Mignolet’s swift integration at Anfield may have been overlooked by many.

The Belgium goalkeeper has conceded just eight goals in his side’s nine Premier League matches, keeping three clean sheets in the process, which has pushed Brendan Rodgers’ men into third spot behind Chelsea and Arsenal.

Shelvey apologises to Swansea fans

Tuesday, 17 September 2013

Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey struggled to conceal his emotions after taking a leading role at both ends of the pitch in the 2-2 Premier League draw with his former club Liverpool on Monday.

Shelvey opened the scoring for Swansea but two poor passes allowed Liverpool to take the lead before his neat header set up striker Michu for a second-half aqualiser.

"I just want to say sorry to the Swansea fans for the two bad mistakes that gifted Liverpool a draw and I thought we deserved more than that," Shelvey told Sky Sports.

The former Reds man scored and set one up for the home side but also gifted his former employers two goals as Brendan Rodgers' men remain unbeaten in the league.

Jonjo Shelvey starred at both ends as Liverpool survived a late Swansea barrage to maintain their unbeaten start to the season at the Liberty Stadium.

Shelvey weaved through the Reds defence early on to give the hosts the lead, before a stray backpass gifted Daniel Sturridge the chance to score his fourth goal in as many matches.
