Now that Luis Suarez has been cleared by the Court of
Arbitration for Sports (CAS) to start training with his new Barcelona
team-mates, the Catalan Giants can finally see their man in Blue and Scarlet as
he’ll be unveiled on Monday,18th August 2014,on occasion of the Joan Gamper
Trophy match against Mexico’s Club Leon.
The 27-year-old is eligible to feature as he is now free
to enter stadiums and play in non-competition friendly matches with his new
club (Huge relief for Barcelona fans and lovers).
There are so many talking points regarding this issue, so
many questions on the lips of football lovers. What improvement could Luis
Suarez possibly bring to the Spanish Giants after an unimpressive performance
last season? Would he adapt to the tiki taka style of play the club is known
for? Are Barcelona losing their values by signing such a controversial player?
Would his presence compensate for the exit of the likes of Alexis Sanchez and
Cesc Fabregas? The questions are endless!
Luis Suarez is a versatile player and can function in any
position on the frontline. He is a beast on either flank and even more beastly
in the centre-forward role, his 31 goals in 33 matches for Liverpool last
season being an evidence. His ability to create goal-scoring opportunities for
team-mates is an added advantage. His combination with Lionel Messi and Neymar
would form the most attractive frontline in the world! (Some might grunt
regarding this). The combination of these three selfless players would improve
the finishing of the team which was not all too great in the 2013/2014 season.
As Barcelona have been tagged ‘Messi-dependent’, the
presence of the former Liverpool player could reduce the pressure on the little
guy and boost the confidence of the players and fans whenever the Argentine is
absent for one reason or another.
Luis Suarez, even coming on as a substitution has the
potential to change the pattern of matches and Barcelona have been in need of
such a player.
Barcelona’s tiki taka style of play has been in obvious
need of an upgrade and the inclusion of Luis Suarez, who is more direct in
front of goal would add an extra intensity and make the team less predictable.
(Possession doesn’t win matches, goals do!). With Iniesta, Busquets and Rakitic
in the midfield, Barcelona still hold on to possession.
Though highly controversial, Luis Suarez is definitely
one of the most prolific and sorts-after strikers in the world at the moment,
and hey, which club wouldn’t want such a player? The values or ethics of
Barcelona do not change with the Uruguayan’s signing.
The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has confirmed
that the last day of Luis Suarez’ ban is 24th October, which means he will be
eligible to make his competitive debut on 26th October against Real Madrid
(Perfect timing!). As seen from his first training with Barcelona, Suarez seems
to be ‘bonding’ with his new team-mates especially Andres Iniesta and he
declared he “feels like a footballer again” For now, we can only wait and
speculate, but it is very likely that the star will shine at Barcelona……
Hopefully, biting is a thing of the past. It wouldn’t hurt to file his teeth
down a bit though…. Just saying!
