The World Cup semi-final between Brazil and Germany has
broken the record for the most people discussing a sporting event on Twitter.
The game itself was won by Germany by hammering their
hosts 7-1 to reach the World Cup final where they will play Argentina, who are
bidding for their third World Cup.
It was easily the most talked about event on the social
network with 35.6 million tweets generated in relation to one of the most
incredible games in the tournament’s history.
That smashed the previous record of 24.9 million which
was set earlier this year on February 2 for the American football showpiece,
the Super Bowl.
The peak of the tweets was reached for the fifth goal of
the game, scored by Sami Khedira on 29 minutes, which unbelievably recorded
more than 580,000 tweets per minute.
According to Twitter Data, the two most mentioned players
were Miroslav Klose and Julio Cesar.
