UEFA has confirmed that Nissan will replace Ford as
a Champions League sponsor from next season.
Financial terms of the four-year agreement were not
disclosed. But the value of such sponsorship packages is estimated at more than
$70m per season.
Ford announced in March that it was ending its 22-year
partnership of UEFA’s top club competition.
Under the deal, Nissan gets rights and branding around
Champions League matches. The agreement also includes the UEFA Super Cups in
2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Nissan's global head of marketing Roel de Vries said the
company’s largest ever sponsorship deal was aimed at growing its profile in
Europe.
"The power of the Champions League is that we can
reach people everywhere with it," he was quoted by Reuters. "A big
part of that is obviously Europe where we have ambitions to be the number one
Asian brand.”
"Innovating to excite is what Nissan does, and as
partners with UEFA we are looking to introduce new ways in which to enrich the
UEFA Champions League experience," he added in a statement.
“Europe's most prestigious football competition will be
an important global platform for Nissan, and our aim is to show fans all over the
world the excitement of both football and our cars.”
Guy-Laurent Epstein, marketing director of UEFA Events
SA, said: "We feel that the partnership will provide a great deal of
innovation and excitement across all markets worldwide, and we are convinced
that Nissan can use the platform that the UEFA Champions League offers to
further build on their current success."
Nissan joins Heineken as the second Official Partner of
the UEFA Champions League for the 2015-2018 period alongside adidas, which is
the Official Supplier.
