Leicester's 10-year Premier League exile is over as a
combination of results secured Nigel Pearson’s side promotion back to the top
flight.
BBC presenter and former Leicester favourite Gary Lineker
led the congratulations while Pearson targeted the Championship title.
QPR’s defeat at Bournemouth and Derby’s failure to win at
Middlesbrough were just what was required by Leicester, who had beaten
Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 on Friday night.
‘I am delighted for everyone associated with the club. It
has been a long time coming,’ Pearson said.
‘Now we want to finish the season on a high and try to
win the Championship.’
Leicester are nine points clear of second-placed Burnley.
Pearson is proud of the character shown by his players after an agonising exit
from the play-offs 12 months ago had Pearson fretting for his future.
He said: ‘There was always going to be a question mark
about how the players came back, but they came back with a really positive
outlook.
‘It has gone very, very well, we have been consistent
throughout the season, and it is really special for us to have achieved
promotion with six games left.
‘We have been front-runners since, probably, Boxing Day,
and 21 games unbeaten is not easy.’
Keeper Kasper Schmeichel can’t wait for the opportunity
to run out at Old Trafford where his father, Danish keeper Peter, carved out
such a memorable career.
‘It’s been my dream since I was a kid to play in the best
division in the world so I’m thrilled to have finally made it,’ he said. ‘Old
Trafford is obviously the place where I watched so much football, so that will
be a special place.
‘But really I’m just excited about playing anywhere.’
Lineker, who scored 95 goals for his home town club,
tweeted: ‘Leicester City are promoted to the Premier League. A sentence I’ve
been waiting to say for 10 years.’
