Ginter set for Westfalenstadion after Manchester United
and Arsenal miss out
Manchester United and Arsenal are set to miss out
talented Freiburg defender Matthias Ginter with Borussia Dortmund closing in on
a deal for the German youngster.
United had looked to be in pole position to sign the
20-year-old with David Moyes making personal scouting trips to see him in
Bundesliga action.
The German International had told reporters he wanted to
join a ‘big club’ only a few days after Moyes’ trip to Germany but following
the Scotsman’s sacking on Tuesday, United now appear to be out of the running.
Ginter had long been touted as a long-term replacement
for the outgoing Nemanja Vidic but with managerial uncertainty at the club and
the likes of Louis van Gaal and Carlo Ancelotti vying to replace Moyes, it is
unknown who will be targeted for a summer move to the Red Devils.
Arsenal were big admirers of the German defender and
tried to bring him to the Emirates Stadium last summer.
Freiburg held firm then and now Arsene Wenger’s interest
appears to have cooled, leaving Dortmund in pole position for his signature.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have already been busy building a
squad to challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title next season with
deals for Dong-Won Ji, Adrian Ramos and Nuri Sahin already confirmed.
According to reports in Germany, they look to have stolen
a march on their rivals and Ginter could be the next name through the door at
the Westfalenstadion with an £8m deal already seemingly agreed.
Dortmund, may not stop their summer spending there with
Klopp still targeting a move for former player Shinji Kagawa.
The Japanese playmaker is thought to be happy to stay at
Manchester United but Dortmund will look to take advantage of uncertainty at
the club to bring the 25-year-old back to BVB.
