Like watching a car crash in slow motion, Yohan Cabaye
leaving Newcastle for PSG is now confirmed.
It is widely reported that the Newcastle talisman will be
in Paris today (Tuesday) to go through his medical and then sign on the dotted
line.
While Ashley’s mates at Sky Sports are reporting that the
fee is ‘significantly higher than initial £14m bid’, the ever reliable BBC (who
have nothing to gain from kite flying as they are guaranteed our money
already!) are stating that the fee is £19m with possible future add ons that
would take it beyond £20m.
With Newcastle United so close to Sky, it would appear
likely that a not so subtle favour has been done in reporting that initial ‘bid’
of £14m to then supposedly soften the blow when it turns out to be a ‘strongly
negotiated up’ £19m (or round it up to £20m to make it sound better).
Newcastle’s biggest asset and goal scoring playmaker
going for half of what a Chelsea midfielder has just gone for, doesn’t sound
like the greatest deal in the world to me.
It would appear that Mike Ashley has cashed in his chips
now rather than risk getting less in the summer.
The other incidental factor is of course that there is
still almost half a season to go and the last time we had this points total at
this stage we only missed out on a top four spot on the final day of the
season.
A win for Newcastle tonight and a Merseyside draw, would
put United five points off fourth with a home match against relegation
candidates on Saturday.
The £35m for Carroll was mad money, but to me so is £19m
for Cabaye, only this time in a very bad way.
