The Dutch international slipped through United's fingers
this summer - but they could now go back in for him.
Roma star Kevin Strootman is the playmaker David Moyes
wants to run Manchester United’s midfield, writes Steve Bates of the Sunday
People.
The 23-year-old Dutch international slipped through
United’s fingers last summer when he left PSV Eindhoven for Serie A in a
£17million move.
But, despite Strootman making a major impact at Roma
since his arrival, United are plotting an audacious £30m swoop.
United coach Phil Neville made a personal check on
Strootman in Holland’s recent international friendly with Colombia.
And United have been given more encouragement that they
can land the midfield star with Strootman’s former manager at PSV, Dick
Advocaat, believing a move to Old Trafford is inevitable.
“Strootman is a pure professional but I do not think he
will stay at Roma that long,” said Advocaat. “And then it will be a team of the
calibre of United who will get him.”
United’s urgency to spend big and re-build the central
midfield was rubber-stamped several weeks ago by the Glazer family.
They are worried at the financial impact of failing to
reach the Champions League next season and are desperate to avoid seeing
millions wiped off United’s overall value by any hint of long-term decline.
