The Spaniard is remaining upbeat regarding his side's
chances of mounting a title challenge after pointing to their points tally at
this stage of the season compared to last
Rafael Benitez has insisted that Napoli remain in the
Serie A title race and is convinced that they will challenge rivals Roma and
Juventus to the very end of the season.
The Partenopei are currently third in Italy's top flight
and sit 10 points behind leaders Juve, but Benitez - who replaced Walter
Mazzarri after he opted to leave for Inter during the summer - is happy with
the campaign to date.
"It's been so far a satisfactory season for
us," Benitez stated in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.
"We have won 36 points in league, better than the
past few years. To be above us, our opponents have needed to accomplish
extraordinary feats.
"We are, however, participating in a marathon and
still have 21 games remaining."
The 53-year-old took was complimentary of both Juventus
and Roma for their respective efforts so far this term but believes there will
still be a few twists and turns before the season reaches its conclusion.
Benitez added: "With 60 points available, our fate
has yet to be written."
Napoli's league campaign resumes on January 6 with a home
fixture against Sampdoria after the conclusion of the international break.
