Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has been praised by
Danish newspaper BT for his contribution to Denmark’s World Cup qualifying
failure. Many of the Danish players have come under fire for the country
missing out on the next year’s tournament in Brazil but Agger was singled out
for his solid performances.
BT has given the Liverpool star 7.3 out of 10 for the way
he conducted himself throughout the qualifying matches which was the highest
rating in the squad. This was based on his average score in the matches he
played in which was helped by his consistency throughout the campaign. BT said because he didn’t have any poor games
this helped to drive up his average. They said Agger was the only stable player
throughout Denmark’s campaign and this must be the reason why he wears the
captain’s armband for his country.
In contrast Tottenham Hotspur new boy Christian Eriksen
was labelled as a flop for his performances in the team. BT gave the youngster
5 out of 10 for his contribution on the basis he rarely turned in a
performances which were better than average. They criticised Eriksen for not
being able to reproduce the form he has shown for his club sides Ajax and
Tottenham.
Agger will see
this was a wasted opportunity for him to go to the World Cup next year which
could now be his last chance to play in the tournament. The Dane will be 33
years old when the next tournament is staged in Russia and by then he could be
replaced in the team because of his age. Denmark did have their opportunities
to make the playoffs but a late goal in the 2-2 draw with Italy last Friday
made things difficult.
It meant Denamrk making the playoffs was no longer in
their hands as they had to rely on results in the final round of matches.
Denmark did win in their final game but they finished as one of the lowest
scoring runners up with 16 points and therefore missed out in next month’s
playoffs.
