Tottenham confirmed on Saturday that United States forward Clint Dempsey has been allowed to return home to Major League Soccer after just one season at White Hart Lane.

Dempsey, the US national team captain, joined Spurs from Fulham last year for £6 million ($9.2m), scoring 12 goals in 43 appearances for the north London club.

But the 30-year-old, who first made a name for himself playing for the New England Revolution before joining Fulham, is now widely expected to join the Seattle Sounders, who currently sit seventh in the MLS Western Conference.

"We have reached agreement with Major League Soccer for the transfer of Clint Dempsey," the Premier League club said on their official Twitter account.
