Soldado eyes top-four finish after completing Spurs move

Tuesday, 6 August 2013

Roberto Soldado has targeted a top-four finish this season after completing his move to Tottenham Hotspur from Valencia for a club record fee.

The two parties agreed a fee of £26 million for Soldado, 28, last week, with the deal hinging on a successful medical.

And Spurs announced the completion of the signing of the Spain international via their official Twitter account on Monday.

The Premier League club also confirmed the news via a statement on their official website, where they revealed that Soldado is expected to be available for their pre-season friendly against Espanyol on Saturday.

Soldado now hopes to fire Spurs into the Champions League. He said: "I'm absolutely honoured to be at this club, to wear the shirt that has so much history. I'm hoping that I can score lots of goals to repay the club's kindness in signing me.

"Spurs is a great club and a club that deserves to be in the Champions League. I know it's a hard league and we have to work and play to that level to get there and I will do my best for the team.

"My main aim is to get that number one striker shirt on the pitch and obviously, to score goals and try to get us into the Champions League, where we deserve to be.

"I've joined a great club with a lot of great players. As a group, including the new players, we're looking to improve and our objective is to get Spurs to where we belong."

It is believed the terms of the deal mean Tottenham have made an initial payment of £10m, with three further payments of just over £5m over the next three years.

Soldado, who started his career at Real Madrid, went on to play for Osasuna, Getafe and Valencia, while he has picked up 11 caps for his country.

The striker spoke last week of his desire for his new club to keep hold of Gareth Bale, who has been strongly linked with a move to Madrid.

He was quoted as saying by AS: "Bale is a great footballer and you can see the effort Tottenham are making to prevent him from leaving. Of course I want him to stay."
