With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty
of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with
the latest transfer rumours. Today, Chelsea are ready to table a £40m bid for
Wayne Rooney.
The champions insists Rooney is not for sale at any price
– even if he hands in a transfer request – but the report claims that Chelsea
are confident they can lure the striker to west London this summer and believe
he will only leave Old Trafford to link up with Jose Mourinho at Stamford
Bridge.
The 27-year-old was left “angry and confused” by comments
made by new boss David Moyes last week that suggested he was now playing second
fiddle to Robin van Persie. The Telegraph suggest the player is also unhappy
with Sir Alex Ferguson’s continued presence at the club after being left
seething at his former boss – who publicly revealed he had asked to leave
during a private meeting last season.
Chelsea saw an opening bid of £22m rejected last week but
the fact Rooney ‘leaked’ out his statement on the same day the Blues submitted
this offer is telling. Jose Mourinho has claimed that Rooney is his only
transfer target this summer and it appears he’s ready to go back in with
another bid, with the newspaper suggesting a fresh £40m offer is in the
pipeline.
Whether this will be enough to tempt United into selling
one of their star players to a title rival remains to be seen, but it seems
Chelsea aren’t going to give up their pursuit without a fight.
