Who has been the
greatest partnership to have graced the Premier League since it started? Here
are my top Five:
5. Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic | Manchester
United
Brilliant but not the
best United pairing. Since becoming a defensive partnership, the two have won
the Premier League more times than anyone else on the list, with successes in
2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011. A Champions League medal and two League cups also
fill their cabinets. They are also on course for another league title this
season, despite injury limiting the opportunities for the two as a pairing.
4. Sami Hyypia, Jamie Carragher | Liverpool
Sami Hyypia joined
Liverpool in 1999 and formed a formidable defensive partnership with Stephane
Henchoz and then with Jamie Carragher. It was this pairing which helped
Liverpool to win the Champions League in the 2004/05 season.
3. Steve Bruce, Gary Palister | Manchester
United
This partnership is
arguably the best defensive partnership Manchester United have ever had. These
two were inseparable in the first 4 seasons of the Premier League, winning
three of them. Steve Bruce captained the team to the double in 1993-94. and
Gary Pallister made the team of the year from 1992 to 1995.
2. Tony Adams, Steve Bould | Arsenal
Part of the legendary
back five which included David Seaman, Lee Dixon and Nigel Winterburn, they
overturned an 11 point deficit to win the Premier League in 1997/98 and
followed that up with the FA Cup. These two worked the offside trap to
devastating effect, conceding just 10 goals at home in the double wining year.
1. John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho | Chelsea
Chelsea’s greatest
defensive partnership helping them to two successive Premier League titles.
Mourinho brought the best out of John Terry and the Blues hit a number of
records during as these two warriors were in the back-line. With the fewest
goals against in a Premier League season (15), most clean sheets kept in a
season (25), most wins in a season (29), and the most points in a season (95),
Terry and Carvalho will keep a legendary status at Stamford Bridge.
