The Obafemi Awolowo University men's team has won the
coveted football gold at the just concluded 2014 Nigerian University Games
The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) men's team has
defeated the University of Calabar men's team 1-0 to win the coveted football
gold medal as the 24th Nigerian University Games came to an end on Saturday on
the campus of the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The game ended goalless at half time as Goal monitored
events.
However, the hosts scored in the second half and kept
their lead to win their first ever football gold in the competition's
illustrious history. Their captain Ayo Faleti was also named the tournament's best
player.
In the match for bronze medal, the University of Jos
defeated the University of Lagos 3-1.
It was a time of rejoicing for coach Chike Egbunu-Olimene
and his boys as their victory sent the university community and environs into
rapturuous celebrations with chants of "Great Ife!!!" all over the
place.
Vice Chancellor Tale Omole could not hide his joy also as
the team crowned a successful competition with the biggest medal of all.
The NUGA games have produced some key athletes for the
country since it started with a major name being Olusoji Fasuba, the African
record holder in the 100metres, who won NUGA gold as an OAU student.
The University of Markurdi will host the 25th NUGA Games.
