Liverpool this morning will be on alert as it emerged in
Spain that target Martin Montoya has put a complete stop on his contract talks
with Barcelona. The 22 year old has been linked with the Merseyside club over
the past few months and it is looking more likely that he will be exiting the
Camp Nou in the near future.
Spanish newspaper AS claimed on Saturday that
negotiations to extend his contract beyond June 2014 have come to a halt
meaning he will be free to speak to other clubs in the next few days. Due to
the lack of cover in defence Barcelona will be reluctant to let their former
academy player leave in the next transfer window meaning Liverpool could sign
the defender on a free in July.
The Premier League side will face competition from
several clubs across Europe who have all been taking an interest in the former
Spanish U21 international. Montoya has spoken about a possible desire to move
away from the Spanish champions which has alerted the likes of Liverpool. The
young defender has found it difficult to force his way past right back rival
Dani Alves and is looking to leave to find regular first team football. He has
made only 32 appearances in La Liga since he made his debut in 2011 and has
mainly been used as cover for the Brazil international.
The Daily Mirror reported last month that Liverpool are
looking to bring Montoya in during the winter transfer window. It was claimed
that Managing Director Ian Ayre had travelled to Spain to discuss a possible
move in January. Liverpool were looking to sign the Spaniard on a free in the
summer but with the injury to Jose Enrique the club now want a deal to happen
in the New Year. That's where a problem could come with Barcelona preferring a
summer exit, if Montoya is to leave, and Liverpool keener on a winter move.
