Moyes: Januzaj can learn from Messi behaviour

Tuesday, 5 November 2013

The 18-year-old was stamped on by Sascha Riether on Saturday and his Manchester United boss says he can learn from the Barcelona star's approach.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has called for more protection for Adnan Januzaj while suggesting his player looks to Lionel Messi's reaction to poor tackles.

Fulham defender Sascha Riether was charged with violent conduct by the Football Association on Monday following United’s 3-1 win at Craven Cottage, when he stamped on the youngster.

The Scot feels the 18-year-old is being targeted by opposition players and suggested that analysing the way Barcelona forward Messi deals with being hacked down by defenders will benefit his attacker.

"I hadn't seen it until after the game, the view from the dugout made it impossible to see, but it's a bad stamp and it does look deliberate," Moyes told reporters.

"It's over now but I do think Adnan is going to need a little bit more protection or we are going to find he is getting kicked up and down. I do think he deserves a little bit more than he is getting at this time."

"We have spoken to him about it. I have got to say he gets kicked up and down in training every day and gets on with it.

"He's learned from the good professionals that he's got to get on with it.

"He only needs to look at Lionel Messi who is probably the best in the world at getting kicked, getting up and getting on with it and continuing to produce magic all the time.

"I'm not in any way comparing Adnan to Lionel Messi, so don't be saying that, but I'm certainly saying the way Lionel Messi gets up after being kicked, we hope that's the way Adnan continues to behave too.

"Somewhere along the line if he is going to continue playing in the fashion and style we want he'll need to get protection. It's up to referees to do what they think is right."

Pellegrini warns CSKA fans against repeated racial abuse
Uefa punished the Russians after Yaya Toure was subjected to offensive chanting during the reverse fixture and the Manchester City boss is now keen to move on.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has warned CSKA Moscow fans against repeating their racial abuse of Yaya Toure.

CSKA's next home Champions League match will take place with part of their stadium closed after Uefa punished the Russian club for the abuse Toure suffered during last month's meeting with City in Russia.

The two teams meet again in Manchester on Tuesday, with Pellegrini hoping lessons have been learned by the CSKA support.

"The fans of CSKA made an important mistake," the Chilean told reporters. "I don't know why CSKA denied it at the beginning; I don't know what their reaction is now.

"Uefa acted and gave them the punishment it deserved. Hopefully we can leave this in the past. Hopefully it will be an example for Russian fans because they have a World Cup in their country."

Pellegrini confirmed injured duo Vincent Kompany and Stevan Jovetic will miss Tuesday's Group D clash with CSKA, while Costel Pantilimon will be preferred in goal to Joe Hart once again.

Hart was dropped for Saturday’s 7-0 victory over Norwich after making a string of mistakes, but Pellegrini has praised the response of the England No.1.

"Joe has reacted very well," he added. "For him this is a good thing after playing so many matches over the past two or three years.

"He has been working no problem, supporting Costel. Nobody wants to be out but he thinks a rest will be useful for him too."
