The 52-year-old coach has called for his side not to
underestimate anyone this season, while remaining cryptic on his conversations
with new club owner Erick Thohir
Walter Mazzarri believes he has steered Inter back on to
the path to success in Serie A ahead of Saturday's clash with fourth-placed
Hellas Verona.
Failure to win in their last three games has seen the
Nerazzurri slip to fifth in Italy, nine points adrift of leaders Roma, but the
former Napoli coach - who took over at San Siro this summer - has no doubt that
his players are on the brink of something special.
"It doesn't matter where we are now, what matters is
how the team grows throughout the season and how we end it," Mazzarri, 52,
told reporters. "We must go beyond the results and look at how we've
played in recent games.
"We're on the right path. Inter will be competitive
again, I'm sure of that. The club's history and tradition dictate that.
"We've started the season much better than we were
expected to, but we must not underestimate the defensive side of things. We
must start paying attention to all the details again in that side of the game.
"We can't underestimate anyone or anything, and we
have to try and maintain our balance on the break. The players deserve praise
for their character, togetherness and organisation."
Mazzarri went on to reveal he has met with new Inter
owner Erick Thohir, who completed his takeover of the club earlier this month,
and suggested the Indonesian businessman was happy with the way things are
progressing at Giuseppe Meazza.
"I've been in contact with Thohir but I'd rather
keep club matters to myself," Mazzarri added.
"I'm happy that Thohir said what he did about me and
the team. We'll go a long way regardless of how we do in the short term."
Inter's clash with Hellas Verona on Saturday kicks off at
20:45CET.
