Sam Stosur came from a set down to beat Canadian teenager
Eugenie Bouchard 3-6 7-5 6-2 and claim the WTA Japan Open title in Osaka.
The former US Open champion claimed a second title of
2013 with her second Japan Open title - adding to the one she claimed back in
2009.
Stosur sent down three aces in the match at the Utsubo
Tennis Center and eventually wore down his 19-year-old opponent to win in two
hours and 13 minutes.
Bouchard started well, breaking the Australian three
times in a dominant opening set, and the second was a real struggle until
Stosur managed to grab a break at 5-5 when it looked like heading to a
tiebreaker.
After Bouchard had held serve to start the final set,
Stosur got on a roll and won the next four games on the spin to open up a
commanding advantage she would never relinquish.
"Eugenie was playing really well today. I just had
to stick it out in the second set, and I'm pretty happy with how things went in
the third," Stosur said.
"I love playing here. I love the site and the fans
are great - I always feel like I have lots and lots of support when I come to
Osaka."
A fifth career title for world No 20 Stosur saw her win
twice in a season for the first time, after she also claimed the title in
Carlsbad in August in her only other final appearance of 2013.
