Henrik Stenson walked off with a cool $11.4m after
victory in the Tour Championship in Atlanta secured him the FedEx Cup.
Stenson, the leader since day one in the FedEx Cup finale
at East Lake, kept a lively chasing pack at bay by posting a final round 68 to
finish at 13-under, three shots clear of Americans Jordan Spieth and Steve
Stricker.
The Swede, who had led by nine shots at the turn on
Saturday, saw that lead whittled down to just one after an electric burst of
seven birdies in 10 holes by 20-year-old Spieth.
But he held his nerve down the stretch to secure the
$1.4m first prize for winning the Tour Championship plus the mighty $10m bonus
prize for winning the FedEx Cup.
Stenson started the final day with a four-shot lead and
had extended that to five at the turn after a solid outward nine of one-under
34.
Another birdie at 11 strengthened his position although
by that stage Spieth had already started to press the accelerator.
The youngster birdied seven, eight and nine to turn in 32
and then went on a superb run on the back nine to add four more in a row from
the 13th.
Lead down to one
When Spieth birdied 16 and Stenson bogeyed 14 - his only
blemish of the round - the lead was down to just one shot.
But, in truth, the idea of an incredible turnaround
lasted for just a fleeting moment. Spieth came up short with his approach to 17
and bogeyed from a poor lie in the sand while Stenson calmly birdied the par
five 15th to give himself a three-shot cushion again.
The 37-year-old, who finished runner-up in The Open at
Muirfield two months ago, made solid pars at 16 and 17 and closed out victory
with an up-and-down from sand at the par three last.
Stricker made a late bid for glory when he holed an eagle
putt from 20 feet at 15 to move within two.
But Stenson's birdie on that same hole left him too much
to do and Stricker, who signed for a 65, could only par in to match Spieth's
10-under.
Dustin Johnson, who started the day as Stenson's nearest
rival, cut the gap to three early on with a birdie at the third and was tied
second with two to play before he triple-bogeyed the 17th.
A two at the last gave him fifth place on eight-under.
Webb Simpson finished alone in fourth after a closing 63 - the best round of
the day.
Tiger Woods shot his lowest 18 of the week, a 67, to
finish tied 22nd of the 30-man field. Nevertheless that was still enough for
the world number one to finish second in the final FedEx Cup standings.
