The Bayer Leverkusen striker may be cleared by Fifa in
May to feature for the national team in its tight mid-year schedule
The Nigeria Football Federation has revealed that the
clearance of former German youth international, Sidney Sam is well on course
and that the Bayer Leverkusen player could make his debut for the Super Eagles
at the Fifa Confederations Cup in June.
"We've really progressed in the quest for Sidney
Sam,” Ademola Olajire, NFF media spokesperson told the BBC.
Fifa laws stipulate that a player having played for
another country at youth level must submit a written request to change his
nationality.
“We are just waiting for two documents from the player to
complete our presentation.
"After previous applications by Shola Ameobi and
Victor Moses [former England youth internationals] two years ago, we remain
confident this will be sorted without any hassle.
"We are looking at the possibility of having him in
the team for the Confederations Cup in Brazil.
"It's very possible [to get his clearance] because
the documents are all in place now and it will be a big boost for the player to
start with a prestigious Fifa tournament."
"It's 80% sorted, so we believe clearance can be
obtained before the competition in Brazil.
"The coach has emphasised the importance of having
Sidney Sam in his squad and we are optimistic of favourable and quick
ruling," Olajire added.
The 25-year old was born to a German mother and Nigerian
father and has played 22 times and scored five goals in the current Bundesliga
season.
