The Blancos star admits that the chances of
catching Barcelona are slim and Champions League success is more realistic
Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested that it would
take a miracle for Real Madrid to overhaul Barcelona's lead in La Liga and cast
doubt on such a scenario happening this season.
Los Blancos remain 13 points behind the
Catalans despite a 5-1 win over Levante on Saturday, which saw Ronaldo score
his 29th league goal of the season.
Speaking to journalists after the game, the
Portuguese forward refused to completely give up hope when asked about Madrid's
title defence though admitted that winning Liga games could provide a morale
boost for success in Europe.
"I do not believe in miracles," the
28-year-old replied when asked about chasing down Barca.
"It may be possible but it is very
difficult, almost impossible. Yes, you have to win to gain confidence for the
Champions League and winning trophies always gives you confidence - this is the
thought we must always hold on to.
"It's not about me - what matters is
Real Madrid and continuing to win. Scoring goals is important but my priority
is to help the team and that's my job. The team was playing well, I went on in
the second half and tried to help with a goal and an assist."
The former Manchester United winger also
spoke about Madrid's ambitions in going for a 10th European title - La Decima -
but warned against complacency despite thrashing Galatasaray 3-0 in last
Wednesday's quarter-final first leg.
"The tie against Galatasaray is not
decided," he added. "We have a good advantage, and we will fight.
"I do not know if we are favourites to
win the Champions League and I do not like to talk about it either. But I think
we do have a good chance of reaching the final."
