Sergio Aguero scored twice as Manuel Pellegrini's men roared to victory at the Etihad Stadium with a magnificent late free-kick from Wayne Rooney scant consolation for the visitors.


Manuel Pellegrini was an emphatic winner in the battle of the Manchester derby debutants in the dugout on Sunday, as his side ruthlessly took apart David Moyes' reigning champions at the Etihad Stadium.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring in impressive fashion as he volleyed home early in the first half, before Yaya Toure forced the ball over the line just before the break to put City firmly in the ascendency.

Manchester City take on Viktoria Plzen in their first group game match of the new European campaign, and the Chilean insists the Czech champions must be respected.

Manuel Pellegrini has warmed Manchester City against complacency as they gear up for their Champions League opener against Viktoria Plzen.

The 2011-12 Premier League winners have crashed out in the group stages of Europe's premier club competition in the previous two seasons, and the Chilean has urged his side to respect their Czech opponents or risk a similar fate.

The former Manchester United striker struck twice to earn the newly-promoted hosts a remarkable upset win in the Welsh capital.

Frazier Campbell headed a second-half double as Cardiff City marked their first home game in the Premier League with a stunning 3-2 victory over Manchester City.

The Welsh side had had to come from behind to secure the three points, with Edin Dzeko having fired the visitors into the lead in the 52nd minute with an outstanding strike from distance.

City were not ahead for long, though, as Iceland international Aron Gunnarsson netted a close-range finish on the hour, after Campbell had seen his effort saved by goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini revealed he could still be in the market for a new defender after the club slumped to defeat against Arsenal in their final pre-season match before the new campaign.

City were beaten 3-1 by the Gunners in Helsinki on Saturday, with Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud all netting against the defeated FA Cup finalists before Alvaro Negredo pulled a goal back late on.

Pep Guardiola says Bayern Munich are ready to defend their status as German and European champions following a successful pre-season where they won the Audi Cup, beating Manchester City 2-1 in the final.

Die Roten racked up an incredible 65 goals in pre-season friendlies, culminating in Mario Mandzukic's winner after Thomas Muller had levelled from the spot following Alvaro Negredo's opener for Manuel Pellegrini's men on Thursday.
