Wilshere charged by FA

The Football Association have charged Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere with "making an offensive and/or insulting and/or abusive gesture".

The charge relates to an alleged gesture made by the England international during Arsenal’s 6-3 Premier League defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger says Jack Wilshere has gone to play for England with Arsenal's blessing and has been assured by Roy Hodgson that everything possible will be done to protect his fitness.

The midfielder spent more than a year on the sidelines with knee and ankle problems between 2011 and 2012 and underwent a minor operation earlier this summer.

He has been nursed through Arsenal's pre-season campaign and only played the first half of Saturday's 3-1 friendly victory over Manchester City.

WHY JACK WILSHERE SHOULD BE THE NEXT ARSENAL CAPTAIN

It has been a truly disappointing season for Arsenal and for all Arsenal fans there is no denying that, but there has been one glimmer of hope for the Gunners.

After 15 months out of the scene due to a very unfortunate stress fracture ankle injury, Jack Wilshere returned to the Arsenal side with a lot of pressure on him.

Since then Wilshere has shown he has what it takes to be at the very highest level, assisting goals, scoring the winner against Swansea in the FA cup reply and showing huge passion to even captain the side whilst Thomas Vermaelen was absent. These performances have not gone unnoticed either, providing Wilshere with a call-up to the English national side where he showed up the Brazilian opposition with his talent.

Rumours have been floating around over the speculation of Vermaelen's future as captain. The Arsenal captain has also been linked with a £15 million switch to the Nou Camp, but after the dismal time former team-mate Alex Song is having sitting on the Barca bench, this move looks unlikely for the Belgian international.

What does look likely on the other hand is the loss of the captain’s armband for the centre-half. It shows that from his horrific drop in form that he has not lived up to the player we all expected him to be, and he has not coped with the captaincy well either. Rarely shouting orders at the back four lined up next to him and the lack of leadership at Arsenal suggests he is simply not the right man for us.

Bare in mind we can't be too harsh on him, having to cover the pace-lacking German Per Mertesacker who plays next to him and sometimes having to fill in at left back position whilst Gibbs has been out.

Is there a lack of passion at Arsenal? You could argue so, yes, but one man who shows signs of hunger and fight is the 21 year old Jack Wilshere and surely with his outstanding performances and passion for this Arsenal team he deserves the armband? Since Patrick Vieira we really have lacked a inspirational leader. Henry was made captain to stay, but did a good job, but many argue strikers are not set out to be captain material.

Moving onto William Gallas, who just threw a strop if we lost and sat in the middle of the pitch and sulked is also something we did not need. So came Cesc Fabregas who was made captain at around the same age as Wilshere but left the following season, and alas did Robin van Persie. This fresh youngster deserves his chance at such a young age, because there is no sign he wants to leave the Gunners.

So after recent speculation, it looks almost certain that Wilshere will become the new captain of Arsenal over the summer and this is something that Arsenal fans should be looking forward to. It can help bring success back to our game and the lack of passion and fight we are showing at this current moment in the season is worrying, so surely setting this job to our man Jack is what we need?
