Wenger feels for eliminated Napoli

Thursday, 12 December 2013

Arsene Wenger feels sorry for Napoli after the Italians were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League despite a 2-0 win over Arsenal.

Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Callejon scored two late goals for the Serie A club, but Kevin Grosskreutz's winner in Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 victory over Marseille meant Napoli dropped to third in Group F due to their inferior goal difference.

And Wenger, who saw Mikel Arteta sent off late in the second half on Wednesday, believes Napoli can feel somewhat aggrieved to have seen their Champions League journey brought to an end.

Benitez: 'Rotation is necessary'

Sunday, 29 September 2013

Rafa Benitez insists there’s nothing “courageous” about rotating the Napoli squad against Genoa. “I know it’s necessary.”

The Partenopei temporarily went back on top of the table after a 2-0 victory at Marassi, secured with a Goran Pandev brace despite resting players like Gonzalo Higuain and Marek Hamsik. Duvan Zapata was given his Serie A debut in attack.

“I am consistent rather than courageous. I have experience and have been in Europe many times, so I know squad rotation is necessary to make everyone in the side stronger. The team won with character,” Benitez told Sky Sport Italia.

Napoli Are Not Afraid Of Borussia Dortmund

Sunday, 15 September 2013

Both Gonzalo Higuain and Blerim Dzemaili believe that Napoli are in good form in the lead up to their opening Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund.

Napoli maintained their perfect start to Serie A with a 2-0 victory against Atalanta and Higuain has explained how well he is settling in at the club.

“I am very happy for the goal and satisfied to have given my fans a moment of joy,” the Argentinian striker told Sport Mediaset.

“The rapport with Rafa Benitez is ideal, as we work well together and hope this is on the beginning, because we want to aim high.”

Messi hails Argentina partnership with Higuain

Sunday, 24 March 2013

Argentina forward Lionel Messi has revealed his growing understanding with Gonzalo Higuain, after the pair combined to inspire a 3-0 victory against Venezuela on Friday.

Messi laid on his international colleague's brace before getting in on the scoring with a penalty, and the 25-year-old acknowledged the potency of their relationship on the pitch.

"Higuain is a great player because he scores a lot of goals," Messi told reporters after the match. "Every time we play, our understanding together increases.

"Playing together is a great joy shared amongst the members of the Argentina squad. The most important thing is to win, no matter who makes the assists or gets the goals.

"We knew they [Venezuela] would try to hit us on the break, but we had the ball, and scored the first goal. Space opened up for us after that. We were patient."

Higuain shared similar optimism in reviewing his performance with his Albiceleste team-mate, adding: "Every time Leo looks forward, he knows I give him an option, as does [Ezequiel] Lavezzi.

"We are happy to give this victory to our supporters who filled the stadium. We've been playing and winning well for several games at home. We now have a big cushion in fourth place [of the South American World Cup qualifiers]."

Alejandro Sabella's men next travel to Le Paz where they face Bolivia on Tuesday, and Messi was left under no illusions as to the scale of the task awaiting his team, after being on the receiving end of a 6-1 drubbing in 2009.

"The games we are playing are getting more and more difficult," the striker concluded.

"We know we have to be ready for the atmosphere of Le Paz, and know what happened the last time. Personally, it was a very complicated affair, recovering from defeat.

"Hopefully, it will be different this time."
