Boxing: David Haye may be forced into retirement after requiring shoulder surgery

Former world champion David Haye has been told to "seriously consider" retiring from boxing by doctors due to a serious shoulder injury.

The 33-year-old Londoner, who won world titles at heavyweight and cruiserweight, has called off his planned bout against Tyson Fury on 8 February and may well have fought for the final time.

Hayemaker Boxing released a statement which read: "David underwent five hours of surgery in Germany on Thursday morning to reconstruct his right shoulder, and has since been told to seriously consider ending his glittering 11-year professional boxing career.

David Haye and Tyson Fury will now clash on February 8 in Manchester, live on Sky Box Office.

The pair were scheduled to clash on Saturday before Haye suffered a gash on his forehead in sparring last week that required six stitches.

"My fans will still get the chance to see what they all wanted to see this weekend - they'll get to see Tyson Fury sparked out in a spectacular fashion."

Both sides have worked hard to rearrange the huge domestic heavyweight scrap and a swift resolution has been made.

David Haye has been forced to postpone his eagerly-awaited heavyweight clash with Tyson Fury after suffering an injury.

Haye picked up a deep cut in training on Friday and the fight, scheduled for Manchester Arena on Saturday 28 September, has had to be put on hold.

He was training with sparring partner Filip Hrgovic - a 6ft 6" Croatian - when he was cut, and the wound required six stitches.

Haye said: "Gutted isn't even the word.
